Heavy off-square European beech Mantel. Presently air dry, rough sawn, many years in sun under cover. It has a silver grey finish sun bleached, but would suit resawing to straighten faces and edges. Could be further kiln conditioned, dressed square, flat and be epoxy filled. This piece has some hidden figure behind its presently rough exterior. Large dimension wood pieces such as this are capable of movement once in place as they settle and adjust to their new environment. In the case of a mantle, above a fire (heat source) it is best installed in a manner that allows it to move, some further shrinkage is likely. The wood needs to move as it adjusts to its new home. It is also advisable to install it in such a manner as to be easily removed if it requires further dressing to square up or flatten. Such movement and adjustment can be further mitigated with further drying and resawing prior to use.
