The Team Behind Rarefind Timber
Mike Esson grew up on a Canterbury farm just out of Christchurch, where he got interested in trees as shelter-belts protecting the light soils. This led to time with Trees for Canterbury and eventually doing a NZCF in Forestry at the Forestry Training Centre in Rotorua. He then moved into Arboriculture and trained and worked as Arborist for 20 years. As an Arborist he was involved in the listing and protection of Significant trees in our urban areas. Even with our best intentions great urban trees are removed and this led to Rarefind Timber NZ Ltd in 2001 “I felt if we couldn’t save them, we should at least make use of them and give them a second life as wood in our homes”.
Malcolm Williams is specifically focused on the Instrument Woods at Rarefind Timbers NZ Ltd. He has built several instruments himself and acquired a lot of knowledge while working with the wood and customers over the last 12 years. Malcolm brings a keen eye for detail to the selection and preparation of woods for instruments
